Although
they are qualified, the executive director, elected president or other
association leaders cannot effectively manage the strategic planning process
in its entirety. An unbiased outside facilitator is crucial to the process
and provides many benefits:
- Assist in developing an
efficient planning process;
- Development and analysis of
questionnaires designed to provide relevant member feedback for
consideration;
- Produce efficient agendas
that leverage the time dedicated by volunteers to produce the best
possible results;
- Facilitate the group
process in a retreat atmosphere that will allow elected leaders and key
staff to focus on the issues rather than the process;
- Balance competing
participant perspectives and facilitate consensus-building;
- Produce a summary document
and a first draft of the strategic plan;
- Assist leadership to
develop the operational plan that will turn strategies into actions;
- Provide credibility to the
process so busy volunteers know the process will be a valuable
investment of their time.
